Recruitment is always among the major challenges faced in a clinical trial. A wide variety of strategies must be used to ensure adequate enrollment of the study cohort. Recruitment for the Systolic Hypertension in the Elderly Program (SHEP) posed unique problems, so numerous strategies were developed for contacting and screening large numbers of older individuals. The older population is the most rapidly growing segment of US society, and the techniques used for SHEP may be useful in the future as more research is focused on this segment of the population. A review of the literature concerning recruitment for clinical trials has recently been published.
